I would warning you with regard to the use with the stain. Perhaps a heavy shellac (an amber or garnet) could do the trick? Or, a blonde shellac and then a glaze around the top of it with a coloured varnish of some sort if you want something darker? You are going to wish to maintain the capability to see the figure of your top, so may well not want the stain directly in the pores with the wood…
